Just ending a week-long vacation, landed, drove home, and the S.O. decides she need something from the store. Like, she NEEDS it. Ugh...
So me and my oldest boy hop in the car, and take off. I find myself waiting behind a Corolla to make a right turn onto a busy road. There's a break in traffic, let's go... Nope, the Corolla stayed, and I bumped her.
The damage was just a few traded scratches and gouges from license plate screws, but nobody was hurt and the other driver was really cool about it. I offered to swap information, but she didn't deem it necessary, so we parted ways.
I explained to my son that I was just super tired from traveling and wasn't paying attention, and that when you're driving, you need to give ALL your attention, or things can get really scary.
I hate fucking up in front of my kid, but I'm glad he was there for two reasons: if he hadn't been there I would likely have been driving much more carelessly, and my failure in that moment, hopefully, serves as a tiny lesson as to what can happen on the road.
Thanks for reading:

Glad it all worked out. However, Corolla driver should have used the break in traffic to make their turn. Since they didn't they clearly were not paying enough attention.
This is why I want an H1 with an external cage and a push-bar up front. Then Corolla makes the turn anyway.

Could she have gone? Sure. But I can't be the one to judge if she should have or not; I wasn't in her seat.

True.
However, if you thought you could have made the turn safely though you were behind her, then she certainly could have as well.

Hell, it's Texas we're talking about here; most people just jump out into traffic, oncoming-cars be damned. She was the exception.

So many times I have nearly made this mistake, but you can't drive for other people, no matter how much you deem them Hesitato, the wonder driver. I'm all for looking ahead of the car in front of you so you can plan your actions, but I keep getting caught out when the other driver just doesn't want to play ball so generally leave a little more space between us.

Starred simply for the phrase "Hesitato, the wonder driver"...

She must be new to the state.
